On vacation, I often make it a habit not to look at maps so I will get lost, sometimes I’m really completely lost, sometimes only a little. There’s no better way to discover new & unexpected things — that way you usually are literally off the beaten path. That goes well with my no advance camping/hotel reservation attitude. I just sleep wherever I am at the end of the day.

This time, it was a bit different — I had to be at places at certain times ’cause I had reservations & events & planes to catch. So I tried a new gadget — a "DIY laptop-based GPS Navigation system". I intended this as an experiment & backup to the in-car system of my rental car. HERTZ had a change of hard and was asking a lot more than quoted so I settled for a smaller car without NAVI.

To quickly summarize it — with a few exceptions, this combo worked really good. At times really great.
Navigating through Paris with all its one-way streets was really much easier. Not every Paris map shows one-way streets and not every co-driver (I had none) is good at reading maps & giving directions. So it was no surprise to me to see so many cars with small GPS systems on their windshields as well.

There were a few quirks — some were my fault, some were ’cause I wasn’t used to using a NAVI and some were plain dumb instructions and errors from the system. Thankfully this laptop has a decent screen size, so I could get a glance at the detailed map to see what’s ahead and better understand some instructions.

Once I had left the big cities, I was wishing there would be more routing options.
It has fastest & shortest. I wanted the SCENIC route. And I don’t know what the ghosts in this machine were doing — but they directed me onto this tiny crooked street. This sure doesn’t look like the fastest road (which was the option I had selected) — but I got my scenic bypass. And I honestly was surprised this road was in the map at all. As you can see, at times this looked more like the private road up to someone’s garage. Driving 10mph/15km/h seemed like road rage or Rally Monte Carlo. My guess, the locals were so proud of this small road (or had received but not spend funding on improving it), they greatly exaggerated its size and the algorithm picked it up based on size. A pleasant surprise for me. And I guess if you were in a hurry, you would have turned around and headed back.

Brolly (I carry this all year because I live in Melbourne), sunglasses, bike gloves, winter bike gloves (actually ski gloves, I bought myself proper winter gloves bike yesterday) keys, tissues, soap, deodorant (for after jogging at lunch time), plastic pants for when its raining (because I ride a bike to the station), current book, some work reading (Software Test Strategy I am reviewing), phone charger, GPS (work), secure id, cheap digital watch, wallet, train ticket and work pass, personal and work phone (Pocket PC with in built GPS), USB memory stick, bag to put little things into, and an old paper address book that I haven’t quite let go of yet.

PS I have no idea why this photo has by far my most views.

I tested my new Sony GPS Unit today while driving with the car. I suggest to use the GPS Image Tracker software that comes with the GPS Unit to assign, match the GPS, i.e. geotag the photos by writing the latitude and longitude coordinates into the EXIF metadata of the JPG photos and then use Picasa to get them into Google Earth to view them on the map. To visualize the route a bit better you can convert the log files with the GPS data into a .kml or .kmz file that you can then open with Google Earth here:

Using Picasa and Google Earth you can also easily correct the position of the photos since it isn’t always 100% exact due to various reasons.

I can tell it’s worth the money since it is really cheap compared to other solutions. Although it can calculate where you are between logging events, it’s not the most accurate for that it only logs your position every 15 seconds which causes some photos to be offside the street when taking pictures while driving for example. But if you compare that to other solutions, they are much bigger, 4 times as expensive and you have to buy extra software to match the GPS data with the photos that costs money as well.

For a device that connects to satellites 1000 km into the ionosphere just to tell you how fast you are moving, it’s simply amazing. The single point of intersection of the three circles together with a fourth, the earth being a sphere itself, determines the exact position of the device. With all necessary latitude, longitude, altitude information at every instant time, the device can now calculate the exact displacement of the object in a certain time, giving you the value of your speed.*

This is absolutely amazing. Making big satellites and atomic clocks work, just even if for fun for all free! The best part of it with 24 (27, 3 in case of failure) satellites hovering in space 24/7, you get to have at least 3 satellites over any place on the earth. That makes terrific combination. The technology was in fact developed by the U.S. Army at first, but later made public. Now U.K. are planning to get their own GPS systems.

*The technology at its development involves a lot of other concerns, as waves often bounce off tall buildings, the speed of waves often decrease, or the time of the device and the satellite mismatch, all culminating in errors. In the subsequent years, many developments have solved most of the problems, but still it is strongly advisable not to solely trust of Digital cartography in case of emergency or while driving a car. GPS units installed in cars have other reliable sources such as perfectly grafted maps to help them correct errors they may face.
