Garmin Adds New Oregon 450 Mapping Handhelds

The Garmin Oregon and subsequent Dakota color mapping handheld GPS devices broke new ground in usability and features. Garmin has turned its attention to the Oregon line once again, with the addition of 450 (suggested retail, $399) and 450t ($499) models. The only difference between the two 450 models is the inclusion of preloaded 100K topographic maps for the entire United States and 3D elevation perspective in the 450t. The 450 update addresses some beefs we had with the Oregon line, including a brighter display, and an electronic compass that shows your heading even when you’re standing still. Other upgrades include user-selectable dashboards, enhanced track navigation, and high-speed USB. The new track navigation provides a view of elevation changes ahead of you. Add the ability to manage data through free Garmin Connect and free Garmin Custom Maps software, and you have a powerful package for the outdoors enthusiast.
